ApplyingCuriosity is the requirement. The rest is teachable
Helix admits against a published standard rather than against other applicants. If you meet it and there is bench and field capacity, you have a place — there is no quota to be beaten.
What we ask for
The shared first term assumes no prior laboratory experience and teaches the statistics from scratch. What it does assume is that you can handle ratios and proportion confidently, because inheritance and magnification arithmetic arrive in week two and do not wait.
All applicants
- A completed application form and a personal statement of roughly 500 words.
- Evidence of secondary education in a science subject, or equivalent.
- Confident work with ratios, proportion and simple algebra.
- A short reference from a teacher, tutor or employer.
- Willingness to undertake fieldwork, including a residential week.
Without formal qualifications
Applicants who lack conventional certificates sit a ninety-minute diagnostic covering arithmetic, proportion and the reading of a simple data table. It is marked internally, can be sat on site or remotely, and may be retaken once after four weeks. There is no charge for either attempt.
Fieldwork and access
The residential field week is compulsory, but the form it takes is not fixed. Students with mobility requirements, caring responsibilities or medical needs are placed on an adapted program at an accessible site rather than exempted — the learning outcome is the same and the assessment weight is identical. Tell us early and it will be arranged before term rather than during it.

Visit a field day
Optional but the most informative thing you can do. Prospective students join a first-year group at Hollowmere for a day of survey work, twice a term.
Submit the application
Form, personal statement and reference. Read in the order received, never held for a deadline.
Diagnostic, if applicable
Only where conventional qualifications are absent. Ninety minutes, on site or remote, marked within a week.
Decision
In writing within ten working days, with the reasoning stated. Unsuccessful applicants are told exactly what would change the answer.
Enroll, induct, adapt
Safety sign-off, tutor allocation, and any field or laboratory adjustments put in place before the first practical.
Three intakes a year
Applications stay open until an intake fills; late ones roll to the next rather than being refused.

What it covers
Tuition includes all laboratory consumables, microscope and sequencing time, protective equipment, the bound field notebook every student is issued, and the residential field week in full — transport, accommodation and meals.
Not included
- Personal field clothing, though boots and waterproofs are lent from the station store.
- Optional textbooks; every core text is held in multiple copies.
- Travel to a research placement, which the hardship fund routinely covers.
Support
About one student in five receives a fee reduction. The Hollowmere Bursary is awarded on financial need alone and assessed by the Institute office, never by teaching staff, so applying cannot affect how work is marked. The hardship fund meets unexpected mid-program costs including placement travel, childcare during the field week, and equipment replacement where the cause was not negligence.
Instalment plans are available on every route at no extra cost and can be started part-way through a program.
Frequently asked
Do I need biology qualifications?
A science background helps but the diagnostic route exists for applicants without one. The genuine requirement is comfort with ratios and proportion — the biology itself is what we are here to teach.
Is the residential field week really compulsory?
Yes, on every program including part-time and evening. The format is adaptable — accessible sites, alternative dates, childcare support — but the requirement itself is not waived.
I have a mobility requirement. Can I do Field Ecology?
Yes. Several of the sixteen sites have level access and vehicle-accessible survey points, and the transect protocol has an adapted form that produces equivalent data. Contact the program office before applying so it is arranged in advance.
Can I object to a practical on ethical grounds?
Yes, and it is a regulation rather than a favour. An alternative assessment of equal weight is provided, and the request is not recorded against you.
Can I change program after starting?
Freely, up to the end of term one — the shared core means nothing is lost. Later transfers are considered individually and usually mean repeating some practical work.
What happens if I fail an assessment?
Every assessment carries one free resit. A second failure triggers a meeting to agree either a module repeat or a move to a better-suited route.
Do you take international applicants?
Yes. Overseas qualifications are assessed individually and the diagnostic is available remotely where no equivalence can be established.
Autumn applications close 1 August
Later applications roll to the winter intake rather than being refused. If you are unsure you meet the standard, ask rather than assume.
