Our Approach

One subject, four magnifications

A student who understands transcription but cannot explain why a population crashed has learned biology at one scale only. Helix deliberately makes students move between them.

Mechanism before terminology

Students are asked to explain how something works before being given its name. It slows the first fortnight down and speeds up everything after it.

Bench and field together

Every program includes both laboratory and field assessment. Ecologists culture cells; molecular students spend a week doing quadrat counts in the rain.

Statistics taught as biology

Sampling error, replication and significance are taught inside the practical that needs them, not in a separate module students dread.

Codon translation, organelle function, inheritance ratios and microscope calculations — the four things every Helix student can do by the end of term one.

Four routes, one shared core

All students take the same first-term core before specializing. Transfers between programs are permitted at the end of term one without loss of credit.

Molecular Genetics

Transcription, translation, inheritance and the techniques used to read a genome.

Survey method, sampling design, population estimation and long-term monitoring.

Field weeks

Every program includes a residential field week at one of sixteen long-term survey sites. Costs are covered by tuition, including transport and accommodation. Students who cannot attend the scheduled week are placed on an alternative rather than exempted.

Sequencing suite reopens

The refurbished suite is available for third-year project work from week two, with four additional bench positions.

Fieldwork

Hollowmere survey enters year 48

The continuous transect at Hollowmere has now run since 1978. First-year students take their initial quadrat counts there in October.

Teaching

Statistics clinic moves to Tuesdays

The drop-in session for sampling design and significance testing now runs Tuesday afternoons in the computation room.
